Call for Applications of the second cycle

The Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, announced the establishment of the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award), at the first session of the UN-Habitat Executive Board on 30 March 2022. The call for applications and the award ceremony of the first cycle was successfully organized in 2023.

Eligibility

Cities and municipalities around the world are eligible to apply.

Application

The application includes two approaches: self-application and application with nomination. The application can be submitted through the online application portal of this website. 

Criteria

Impact

The profound achievements of the city in realising the SDGs and/or the NUA on the local level, and the proven impact in economic vitality, urban prosperity, green urban development, urban safety and resilience, and/or capacity building for sustainable development.

Innovation

The innovative approaches, methods, practices, technologies or instruments to enable the realisation of the SDGs and the NUA. This can be demonstrated through policy and legislation, planning and design, governance, financing mechanisms, etc.  

Sustainability
This can be demonstrated through (a) medium-to-long-term strategies and plans (b) clear demonstration of 'people-centered approach' and ‘leave no one behind’; (c) actions to institutionalise successful practices; (d) sustainable financing and investment.

Adaptability

This focuses on the extent to which the city's practices, approaches or strategies can be replicated, adopted or scaled up by cities of the same type, similar stage of development, or region in which the city is located.
